FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a terrarium?

A terrarium is a closed and self-sustaining ecosystem, usually in glass, where plants carry out photosynthesis and water cycle. We can also call it a small garden in a closed glass. As an ecosystem that it is, the water cycle takes place inside it and therefore very little water is needed, the water that is initially placed condenses on the glass and returns to the earth.

Should I open my terrarium?

The terrarium should not be left open for long periods of time, as this will drastically alter the humidity and temperature conditions of its ecosystem. However, it is advisable to periodically open the terrarium, especially if the terrarium is at the beginning of its life cycle, to ensure that the plants that have just been transplanted do not suffer from excessive heat or humidity (ideal conditions for decomposition to occur and mildew).

If your terrarium has any of these problems, don't panic! Remove the lid and leave it open until the excess moisture evaporates and the soil becomes less humid. Then close it and see if the reduction in humidity helped to improve the conditions of the plants inside the terrarium.

How often and how do I have to water my terrarium?

The frequency depends on the type of plant and the season. When the terrarium has very clear soil, spray small amounts of water through the glass. In case the terrarium is small, you can use a syringe. Excessive water is always a problem because indoor plants can get sticky.

Of course, the place where the terrarium is placed, the type of glass, the species of plants and the temperature make the watering time vary a lot, so always be aware of your terrarium. They must be placed in a place where they receive indirect light. Any further queries, please contact us at geral@terrario.pt .

My plants are turning dark, what should I do?

If there is excess condensation, you should open the terrarium for a few hours, normally black spots indicate excess humidity. Keep the terrarium clean and from time to time clean it and prune it, removing parts of the plants that have fungus, mold and old leaves.

What kind of lighting does the terrarium need?

The terrarium needs a lot of sunlight or a lamp but in the case of sunlight it will have to be indirect light for the plants to grow healthy. Never expose your terrarium to the sun, as the heating of the glass will bake the plants.

Does the glass get dirty over time? How should I clean it?

The glass will condense with the water cycle and there is no problem, it is a normal process. To clean it, you can use tweezers with wet kitchen paper. In larger terrariums, this cleaning is easily done by putting your hand inside the terrarium.
